Be realistic about your own English proficiency and the amount of time needed to reach the necessary English level for your prospective academic course. Many students assume they will need only five or ten weeks English tuition, but then find they need more time to reach the required grade and cannot progress to their academic course when they had planned. Some prospective University entry students find they must wait an extra six months (until the start of the next Semester), whereas an extra 5 weeks of planned English may have helped them reach the required level in time.

IELTS and TOEFL scores are included in descriptions of our English For Academic Purposes courses as a guide only; to make it easier for students to apply for the appropriate course and so that students can plan the time required to complete their English course before their academic studies begin. We assume that in general, students move up approximately a half band on IELTS for each 3 months of English study in Australia.

The UEEC and Preparation for University Foundation Year courses are accredited courses of 10 week duration. Successful participants of these courses do not have to undertake an external test such as IELTS, TOEFL, or CULT to prove their English if they are entering UNSW. The UEEC is a very popular course and a very rigorous one. Entry to these courses is subject to sufficient results on entry tests.

Admission to the UEEC course is subject to starting times and UNSWIL assessment which students undertake on the first day of term. Final assessment is based on seminar presentations, assignments and exams.

Tertiary institutions look at your academic background for a conditional acceptance, which means they will agree to hold you a place for a certain semester but you will need to prove the required English proficiency in the meantime.
