General
Proficiency English
Course Duration: 5 to 60 weeks
The General Proficiency English program offers courses to develop
the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The classes also
focus on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and emphasize the communicative
use of language. Courses are taught at six levels of proficiency from
Elementary to Advanced. Students take a placement test on arrival to determine
the level of study. All courses include lessons in the computer laboratory
using the Internet and other computer assisted learning materials.
Elementary
(Levels 1-2)
These levels focus on the development of "survival" skills
in the social and educational context with the introduction of appropriate
structures, functions and vocabulary.
Intermediate
(Levels 3-4)
These levels reflect a change in emphasis from specific survival skills
towards a more integrated skills approach and include more advanced lexical
and grammatical areas.
Advanced (Levels
5-6)
These courses include more complex language-based tasks. Grammar learned
earlier is revised and extended in Level 5 and students are prepared for
the Cambridge First Certificate Examination. More specialised and advanced
language is developed in Level 6. Exposure is given to longer texts, and
a range of themes are explored. Level 6 classes include Cambridge
Advanced English Preparation and students can also combine study in Level 6 with classes in Introduction to Language Teaching.
All Levels
All levels include participation in
educational excursions and cultural activities, use of the language laboratory,
the computer laboratory and the Independent Learning Centre for self-directed
learning. Students are assessed, in the form of examinations, and in their
on-going performance in the classroom. This indicates their proficiency
in the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening
and determines progression to the next level.

Cambridge
English Examination Courses
First Certificate
in English (FCE) Course- Level 5ii
Cambridge
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) Course- Level 6
The Cambridge First Certificate and Certificate in Advanced English are
examinations which test students' proficiency in general English. They
are practical, skills-based examinations with papers in reading, writing,
English in use, listening and speaking. The exams are recognized worldwide
as a reliable assessment of English proficiency.
The FCE and CAE courses provide practice in all the necessary skills for
success in the exam. They also help develop independent learning strategies,
for example to revise and extend students' vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
FCE and CAE preparation is available within general English and offered
throughout the year. Courses focus more intensely on examination preparation
in the ten weeks before each exam (in mid March, June and December). Students
complete practice tests, simulated interviews and work on time management
skills for the exam papers.
Students are able to use the Individual Learning Centre, which is equipped
with a wide range of FCE and CAE resources and staffed by trained teachers,
for extra study.
Students are assessed, in the form of examinations, and in their on-going
performance in the classroom. This indicates their proficiency in the
four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Students are strongly advised to enrol for courses
beginning in February and August for the June & December exams as entry dates for the exam are in March
and September. For the March exam, we recommend students prepare in Terms 1 & 2. Students can be registered for the examinations by the
Institute of Languages. Candidates in Cambridge programs are 17 years
of age or above, and do not have English as their first language.
A part-time
course is also available, for further information please click

Basically, I can now apply for a job, enter the University or go to another
English country without any problem."

"It is very important in order to learn about the world, the economy
and to broaden our view. Various skills practised through class - discussion
skills, formal meeting skills, debating skills, presentation skills, negotiation
skills and business writing skills are also very useful for me. I had
a great time with all my multi-national classmates and friends. And maybe

The English for Medical Professionals is an intensive
course for students who have upper intermediate to advanced level
proficiency in English. The course develops the skills required to function
successfully in the workplace as practitioners, or as preparation for
postgraduate study. It suits qualified health professionals, including
doctors, dentists, vets, nurses, radiographers, dieticians, occupational
therapists, speech pathologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and related
medical professionals.
The target
communication skills are presented in context, analysed and practised
through:
- peer analysis
- discussion
- role-plays
- video recording
- audio recording
- medical writing tasks
- grammar
- doctor patient relationships
- Occupational English Test (OET) practice
Feedback
will be provided to students on their development
of these skills and forms the basis of their assessment.
Course participants share the need to develop English in their professional
environments, and many are assessed using the framework of the Australian
Occupational English Test (OET). The OET examines medical communication
skills based on real activities.
Most materials used are Australian and reflect the
communication skills needed by health professionals in a multicultural
society. Textbooks are used, and other materials are drawn from relevant
journals and newspapers, television and radio. These materials are constantly
revised and updated. There are local guest-speakers and visits to appropriate
health organisations, providing an opportunity to learn about the local
health industry through the presentations, and the opportunity to ask
questions, as well as experiencing real-world professional language.
Developing autonomous learning skills is an integral
part of the training and students are encouraged to make use of Individual
Learning Centre (ILC) materials to extend, supplement and reinforce classroom
teaching.
Course development has also relied on input from
a range of consultants, including representatives from hospitals, private
practice, the Australian Medical Council and other professional bodies.
Staff with relevant experience teach on the course, and other staff members
with health professional qualifications also provide input.
Those enrolling on this course need to have an upper
intermediate to advanced level of English. This would be the equivalent
of about 5.5-6.0 on IELTS or a good pass at Cambridge First Certificate.
If you are not sure of your level contact the Institute of languages and
we will arrange for a test of your English level. Some students may choose
to take General English first in order to gain the required English level.
EMP focuses on communication within the health profession and participants
should also have a thorough knowledge of their own specialist area.
