Introduction to Translating & Interpreting

Improve your language skills for a career in translation and/or interpreting.
Are you a student with an upper intermediate level of English who is considering a career in translation and/ or interpreting between English and your native tongue?

What this course offers you

This course includes specific sessions (three hours per week) on the following topics:
  • Translation language skills - dealing with idiomatic language, technical vocabulary, variation in register, etc.
  • Ethics of translation and interpreting
  • The role of the interpreter
  • Approaches to translation: semantic, communicative
  • Types of translation: casual, business and technical
  • Types of interpreting: liaison, consecutive, simultaneous, conference
  • The role of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI)
  • The use of computers in translation
  • Techniques and methods used in the translation of multimedia documents, website translation and localisation.
  • Interpreting Skills required for different situations.
  • Interpreting in the international context.
  • Visits and guest speakers
  • Pathway to NAATI Preparation

This course provides an introduction to the skills needed for further study towards a career in translation or interpreting, for example preparation for the NAATI examination.

Students will have access to a fully equipped Individual Learning Centre and Computer Laboratory.

DIAC eligible students:
30 DIAC hours

There are no course fees for DIAC eligible students as these are funded by the Australian Government, Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
