Language Teacher Education LTE

The Institute has developed a range of courses designed to provide qualifying trainees with the essential experience and skills that are required to teach English successfully to international students.

The courses focus on adult teaching, but many of the practical and theoretical considerations are also relevant to secondary and primary classrooms.

Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages is a rapidly expanding profession. TESOL students from the UNSW Institute of Languages have been successful in gaining teaching positions in public and private sector educational institutions in Australia and overseas. The TESOL courses at the UNSW Institute of Languages are internationally respected and your certificate qualification will be your key to personal and professional advancement.

LOTE teaching in Australia is a rapidly expanding field. LOTE students have been successful in gaining teaching positions in TAFE and the private LOTE educational institutions in Australia as well as overseas.

COTE is designed for people who are planning to teach English overseas, and for whom a pre-service or additional formal qualification is not required. It is not necessary to have a native or native-like proficiency in English to apply for this course.

Our ILT course aims to introduce some of the basic concepts of language teaching to those people who intend to teach overseas in the future. It may also be useful for practising teachers of English overseas who have not had formal training. The course is particularly useful to those people preparing for the Cambridge Proficiency Examination or Advanced Certificate in English who intend to teach in countries such as Greece or Spain, and those studying in other advanced general proficiency courses. It complements the language Cambridge Proficiency course by giving an introduction to language teaching methodology.
