Language teaching
The UNSW Institute of Languages offers a variety of Language Teaching courses ranging from initial pre-service qualifications to professional development courses. While most courses focus on adult teaching, many of the practical and theoretical considerations are highly relevant to secondary and primary classrooms and the courses provide valuable in-service opportunities to professionals working in these fields. The courses have been designed to provide qualifying trainees with the essential experience and skills required to teach English successfully to international students.
Language Teacher Education (LTE)Our LTE course focuses on adult teaching and is designed for those wishing to learn to teach English to speakers of other languages, and also to teach languages other than English. However, many practical and theoretical considerations are also relevant to secondary and primary classrooms.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) TESOL course graduates from the UNSW Institute of Languages have been successful in gaining teaching positions in public and private sector educational institutions in Australia and overseas.
Teaching Languages Other than English Certificate (LOTE) LOTE is a rapidly growing field, with students successfully gaining teaching positions in TAFE and private educational institutions, both in Australia and overseas. Courses in teaching LOTE are offered in the following languages:
Teaching English for Overseas Teachers Certificate (COTE) COTE is designed for people planning to teach English overseas, and for whom additional formal qualifications are not required. It is not necessary to have native or native-like proficiency in English to apply for this course.
Introduction to Language Teaching (ILT)Our ILT course introduces some basic language teaching concepts to people who intend to teach overseas in the future, but who have no current formal training.
