General English

Level 1 - Beginners

This course develops basic English language skills, as well as providing information on life and essential services in Australia and helping the students develop the skills to access these services.

The course develops a solid grammar foundation. All four language skills are addressed: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Topics covered include:

  • personal information;
  • talking about the present and past;
  • describing people and places;
  • medical care, health;
  • shopping for food and clothes;
  • completing forms;
  • banks and post offices;
  • accommodation;
  • transport and giving directions;
  • talking about likes and dislikes.

On successful completion students are awarded a Certificate 1 in Spoken and Written English.

 

Level 2 - Post-Beginners

This course develops English language proficiency in practical situations, and also provides information on the Australian way of life and essential services.

The course builds and consolidates the students' understanding of grammar. All four language skills are addressed: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Topics covered include:

  • people;
  • accommodation;
  • work;
  • leisure;
  • health services;
  • shopping and services;
  • education in Australia;
  • government in Australia;
  • writing letters;
  • telephoning;
  • casual conversation

On successful completion students are awarded a Certificate 2 in Spoken and Written English.

 

Level 3 - Intermediate

This course develops the English language proficiency necessary to undertake further study at university or at TAFE and to find employment.

The course develops students' communication skills and extends students' grammar and vocabulary. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills development are included.

The language is taught in contexts which give students a greater understanding of Australian society.

Topics covered include:

  • Australian Government
  • Multicultural Australia
  • Information Technology
  • Business and Employment Issues
  • Work and Money
  • Law and Crime
  • Living in Society
  • Telephoning
  • Oral presentations
  • Writing -email, letter, essay
  • Understanding Spoken English

On successful completion students are awarded a Certificate 3 in Spoken and Written English, or students may progress to a Level 3 Upper Intermediate Special Focus course, after partial completion of Certificate 3.
