Academic English for Research Post-Graduate Students

This course is designed for post-graduate students who already have an advanced level of English (equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or 7) and who need to develop their academic communication skills further to function effectively in the graduate environment, although they may also be suitable for some undergraduate students.

The primary focus of this course is on writing a research paper/long essay but may also include sessions focusing on grammar, presentations skills, and communicating with supervisors, depending on the specific needs of students enrolled in the course. The course will be project based, incorporating work on the student's ongoing research.

Course content:   This course targets research students doing post graduate research in the physical sciences. The main focus of the course is to assist students to plan, structure and write a scientific thesis. The sessions will include:

  • An introduction and overview
  • Presentation and analysis of a model piece of writing
  • Analysis and practice with areas such as: staging/organising the writing; reporting on: research; materials and methods; discussion; conclusions; writing an abstract and a bibliography.
  • Review of grammar relevant to each section

Depending on the needs of the class the lessons may also include of things such as making a presentation and communicating effectively with your supervisor.
