All NESB teachers seeking employment with the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) are required to have their qualifications assessed by the School Staffing Unit (22 Main Street, Blacktown, phone: 9836 9751) and to pass the Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT). The PEAT is held throughout the year at the UNSW Institute of Languages on behalf of DET.

The following training is offered by the Institute of Languages to overseas qualified teachers who are intending to sit the PEAT test.

PEAT Workshops for Overseas Teachers   (Saturday Morning Workshops)
This series of workshops is held over the four Saturday mornings preceding most of the PEAT tests. Each four hour workshop concentrates on a different language skill assessed in the test: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Each workshop will focus on the skills and strategies necessary to pass rather than on language development. This will include:

  • The content of each section of the PEAT
  • The skills and strategies necessary to pass each section
  • Timed test practice
