The English and Tranlsation/Interpreting Skills course is suitable for students who are considering a career in translation and/or interpreting between English and their native tongue. It includes specific sessions (6 hours per week) on the following topics:

  • Ethics of translation and interpreting
  • The role of the interpreter
  • Approaches to translation: semantic, communicative
  • Types of translation: casual, business and technical
  • Types of interpreting: liaison, consecutive, simultaneous, conference
  • The role of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI)
  • Translation skills -dealing with idiomatic language, technical vocabulary, variation in register, etc
  • Interpreting skills required for different situations
  • Interpreting in the international context
  • Visits and guest speakers

English and Translation/Interpreting Skills is available within the General English programme. The General English course develops language skills and raises cross-cultural awareness , which is essential for successful translation and interpreting.

This course provides an introduction to the skills needed for further study towards a career in translating or interpreting.

On successful completion of the full time course students are awarded a Certificate 3 in Spoken and Written English.
