Sample Programs
These sample programs involve a General English
syllabus, 15 hours per week. The duration of the programs normally ranges
from 2 to 4 weeks. In class, students experience being taught by the communicative
method by means of role plays and demonstrations by experienced teachers
who have been involved in the teaching of English to overseas students
for many years.
The programs aim at developing communicative competence
as well as promoting cross cultural awareness within the Australian context.
The programs include classroom teaching, practice
in the language laboratory and interaction with native speakers of English.
Students will be taught at the Randwick campus of
the university as a homogeneous group, although groups mixed in with regular
international students are also possible if they fit well with the Institutes
term dates. These "mixed in" groups would involve a 25 hour
per week program.

Certificate and Assessment
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued at
the end of the Program. Assessment will be conducted on an on-going basis
and include performance in class, set tasks and course tasks. The certificate
will indicate the level of English attained by the student and give a
specific grade: Pass, Credit or Distinction. These results
could contribute towards students credits at their own universities,
if this can be arranged, for the study they undertake in Australia.
Teaching Staff
The program is designed and delivered by well
qualified and experienced Institute staff.
Accommodation, Services and
Facilities
Homestay accommodation is available for students
and staff participating in the study tour programs. This involves living
with an Australian family, who are located a short distance from the Institute
of Languages campuses. Breakfast and evening dinner is provided on Monday
to Friday. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided on Saturday and Sunday.
Family accommodation of this type contributes to the linguistic and cultural
learning experience undertaken by the course participants. Homestay families
are around 20 minutes travelling time from the Institute by public transport.
Accommodation is handled and difficulties resolved by the Institutes
fulltime Accommodation Officer. The Institute can sometimes arrange on-campus
accommodation (January and February only) or hotel and hostel accommodation.
Security and Insurance
All participants should take out insurance prior
to arrival in Australia. The university has its own security system and
the campus is under 24 hour security surveillance as well as patrolled
and monitored. In addition, there are help line facilities and an emergency
number (6666) to ring. In case of emergency, when they are on campus,
students should seek help from their teachers and when they are at home,
from their homestay parents who will instigate appropriate action.
