of Language Teaching courses ranging from initial pre-service qualifications

from the UNSW Institute of Languages have been successful in gaining teaching
positions in public and private sector educational institutions in Australia
and overseas. The TESOL courses at the UNSW Institute of Languages are internationally respected
and your certificate qualification will be your key to personal and professional
advancement.
The course is offered in two forms: part-time
evening and full-time intensive mode.
Who Should Apply?
Part-Time Course:
Graduates. (Non graduates who only wish to teach overseas, or in non-accredited
Australian institutions, can also apply).
Full-Time Course: Graduates
with a teaching qualification and/or experience.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate an excellent level of proficiency in both written and spoken English. This will be done through an interview and language awareness task prior to enrolment.

Who recognises the University of New South Wales
Institute of Languages Certificate in TESOL?
The National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS)
recognises the Certificate in TESOL, in combination with a 3 year degree,
as an appropriate TESOL qualification for teaching overseas students in
Australia.
For more details, please see:
http://www.neasaustralia.com/fst.html
(Minimum quallifications for teachers note 2.8)
Other adult teaching institutions such as TAFE, WEA,
and a range of community colleges have also employed TESOL graduates.
Non-accredited colleges, or institutions offering short study tours may
not require teachers to hold a first degree.
The Department of Education does not recognise the
certificate as an entry qualification to teach in Goverment secondary
or primary schools. However some private schools may take the certificate
into account when offering employment.
While there is no accrediting body with the role
of granting worldwide official recognition to any teaching certificate,
the University of New South Wales Institute of Languages Certificate in
TESOL is widely known and respected in overseas teaching contexts.
Course Content
The TESOL course at the Institute of Languages
includes all essential elements for sound and stimulating language teaching
and learning. It is a practically oriented course consisting of lecture
input, workshops and a 40 hour practical component.
Five major strands direct course content:
1.The Context of Teaching and Learning
2.Language Theory
3.Lesson Design
4.Course Design
5.Teaching Skills and Strategies
Current theoretical and methodological bases for
effective language learning and teaching, ranging from the principles
of language learning to materials selection and evaluation, underpin all
five strands. Classroom management, multi-cultural and cross-cultural
factors, learning styles, language levels and testing and evaluation are
other vital issues addressed in the course.
Students will also be instructed in the use of the
latest teaching materials and equipment for the language classroom, including
hardware: language laboratories, individual learning materials, video
and audio equipment, and software: computer programs, recording techniques
and reading materials ( both self -developed and published).
Observation
As part of the essential preparation for
the practice teaching, trainees will be required to observe a minimum
of seven lessons at the Institute of Languages. A broad program is provided which enables students to observe as many different teachers and levels of classes
as possible. Observations take place on weekdays generally between 9am and 4pm.
Practice Teaching
Trainees will be placed with a cooperating
teacher from the Institute, or other participating institutions, for the purpose of Micro-teaching and Teaching Practicums.
Micro-teaching is a peer teaching program set up amongst small groups of teacher trainees on the course. This aims to develop the skills of teaching prior to participating in Teaching Practicums with real English language students.
The part-time course involves 4 Micro-teaching sessions of 3 hours each in addition to the lectures/workshops allowing for practice and feedback.
Teaching Practicums consist of 6 hours of teaching with real English language students. Trainees will be provided with the opportunity of observing their class prior to teaching. Practicums consist of 4 x 1 hour teaching sessions and 1 x 2 hour teaching session. The Co-operating Teacher program provides students with supportive and secure step-by-step progression into full lesson planning and implementation. This program requires day-time attendance and its goal is for trainees to reach autonomy in their lesson preparation and teaching practices.
Practicums will be with classes provided by the Institute of Languages'
Adult Migrant and ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas
Students) programs, and participating colleges including Lloyds' International College and Taylors'
College. Highly qualified teachers provide the expertise and practical
knowledge essential for an effective teaching practice component.
Course Timetable
Part-Time-Three
times a year the Institute offers a 20 week course - Monday & Wednesday
evening - from 6-9pm commencing in February and July, and Tuesday and
Thursday evenings commencing in May. This comprises 18 weeks of lecture
input and a two-week mid-course break. Teaching practice requires daytime
attendance.
Full-time Intensive-There will
also be a full-time four week intensive course, especially to cater for
those interested in equipping themselves with TESOL qualifications during
the holiday period, or for whom the evening course is unsuitable. This
course is intended only for experienced teachers. A distance package is
also an integral part of this course and will be sent to fully enrolled
students prior to course commencement.
Hours of tuition are 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
The final week has a reduced lecture program and time allocated for the
completion of projects.
The final assignment, a major work of curriculum
design, is submitted within 8 weeks of the end of the lecture program.
The curriculum design strand can be attempted at normal or advanced level.
Students attempting the latter will complete a more detailed assignment
involving original research, and will be awarded the TESOL Certificate
(Advanced Level). The advanced certificate further enhances employment
prospects and is recommended for degree-holding students who are intending
to undertake further post-graduate study.
