COURSE CONTENT
An Introduction to Grammar for Language
Teachers
Many people are interested in teaching English
or another language, but belong to the "lost generation" who
were never taught grammar in school. If you would not know a noun from
a verb, or a subordinate clause from Santa Claus, this is the course for
you! It will give you the basics and help you understand why certain constructions
are right, others wrong, and others debatable. It is a good confidence
builder for people intending to do a TESOL or COTE certificate courses,
or can be a stand-alone course undertaken for general interest.
More Grammar for Language Teachers
Most teacher training programs do not have sufficient
time to cover all aspects of grammar. In this course, some of the more
challenging aspects of English grammar will be explored. The focus is on whole texts, and topics include: more about nominal groups, more about tense and aspect, the grammar of textual cohesion, and reconciling traditional and systemic functional models of grammar.
An Introduction to Academic English
This course is designed for beginning or less experienced teachers who
have not yet taught English for Academic Purposes. It consists of an outline
of the different types of Academic program taught in Australia and overseas,
and the essential teaching and text analysis skills involved. Participants
are provided with extensive notes and referred to additional reading material.
Teaching Young Learners
While short courses in TESOL usually focus on adult and adolescent learners, teachers who head overseas often find themselves working with younger learners. This can be a real challenge! This very practical course which explores how some familiar activities can be adapted for children. It also introduces participants to a range of fun and motivating teaching techniques. You do not need to have completed a TESOL certificate to attend this course.
