IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is a globally recognised English language proficiency assessment designed to assess the English language ability of international candidates. The IELTS test is available across 120 countries and IELTS test scores are recognised by close to 5,000 professional organisations, educational institutions and government agencies.
UNSW Institute of Languages is an approved IELTS testing centre.

IELTS Test fee increase in Australia
As of 25 May 2009, the IELTS test fee in Australia will be raised to $310.00 (ex GST) for all tests after 1 July 2009. The test fee has remained unchanged since April 2007, and remains $280.00 (ex GST) for tests held before 1 July 2009. Candidates who have already paid for a test held after 1 July 2009 will not be affected.

Test dates

Tests are normally offered on Saturdays, with some sessions on Thursdays.

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day. The Speaking test can take place up to seven days before or after the other papers; speaking tests for Thursday tests will usually take place on the following Saturday.

To register for an IELTS test, you need to submit your application form in person at least five weeks before the test date.

How to apply

You will need:
  • An IELTS Application form
  • A GST form
  • Your current original passport plus a certified photocopy of your passport
  • two current passport sized photos (minimum 35 mm in width and minimum 45 mm in height, with a close-up of the head and top of shoulders)
  • Payment of AUD$310 (AUD$341 with GST payment if required)

All applications must include a current email address and phone number for us to contact you. You must lodge your form and pay in person.

This test centre does accept interstate applications but it is limited to 12 applications per test. Please email the centre at ielts.enquiries@languages.unsw.edu.au if you require further information.

Application steps:

  1. Complete an Application form. Download an application form or collect from the UNSW Institute of Languages.
  2. Complete a GST form. Download a GST form or collect from the UNSW Institute of Languages.
  3. Choose two preferences for your IELTS test date.
  4. Indicate the type of test you need to take - General Training Module or Academic Module (for more details visit the official IELTS website)
  5. Bring your current original passport and provide an original certified photocopy of your current passport. The photocopy must include the pages with your passport photo, number and expiry date.
  6. Bring two passport sized photos taken within the last six months.
  7. Payment of AUD$310 (or AUD$341 with GST if applicable) by credit card (download and complete the Credit Card Payment Authorisation Form), EFTPOS or bank cheque made out to "UNSW Global Pty Limited". All payments must be made in person.
  8. Apply in person with the above documentation to:

Steps in the test process

  1. Confirmation of your test date will be given to you when you submit your application form and your test date will be printed on your receipt.
  2. Check the test centre location. Saturday tests will generally be held at the UNSW Institute of Languages Kensington campus and Thursday tests will be held at the Randwick campus.
  3. Arrive at the location by 8.00 am. Candidate registration on the test day closes at 8.45 am. Latecomers will not be admitted into the test room after this time.
  4. Bring your original passport and letter of confirmation. If you do not have these you will not be able to take the test.
  5. Bring pencils and erasers only which you need for the test.
  6. You must not bring into the test room mobile phones and pagers, electronic equipment, pens, correction fluid, highlighters or anything else that the supervisor of the test asks you to leave outside the exam room. There will be a designated room in which you may leave your personal belongings. Please ensure you have an easily identifiable bag to place them in.
  7. If you are caught infringing any of the candidate rules and regulations your test result will be disqualified. This includes but is not limited to lending or borrowing anything from another candidate during the test, attempting to cheat or copy the work of another candidate, talking or disturbing other candidates, removing any materials used during the examination.
  8. Test results will be available 13 days after the completion of your test.
  9. Test results can be collected in person only from UNSW Institute of Languages, Level 1 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington. You must show your original passport and sign for your results.
  10. Test results not collected in person will be posted to the address provided on your application within three weeks of the test date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring to the test?
You are only allowed to take your passport, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpener into the test room. You may also take water in a clear plastic bottle.

Where can I put my personal things?
There is a bag room clearly marked where you should leave all personal items. All mobile phones should be switched off and placed in the bag room, which will be locked throughout the duration of the test. No responsibility will be taken for the loss of personal items on the test day.

When do I get my candidate number and speaking time?
You will be given a label with these details when you register on the test day. The details will also be listed on a notice board on the Ground Floor. You should check this notice board carefully.

Can I change my test date?
Yes, you can, as long as you do so more than five weeks before the test date, but there will be an administrative fee of AUD$75. You will need to go to the reception office where you applied for the test, bring your original, valid passport and original receipt, and complete the IELTS Change of Test Date or Test Cancellation form.

Can I change from Academic to General Training or from General Training to Academic?
Yes, you can, as long as you do so more than five weeks before the test date, but there will be an administrative fee of AUD$20. You will need to go to the reception office where you applied for the test, bring your original, valid passport and original receipt, and complete the IELTS Change of Test Date or Test Cancellation form.

Can I cancel my test?
Yes, you can, but you need to go to the reception office where you booked your test, bring your original, valid passport and original receipt, and complete the IELTS Change of Test Date or Test Cancellation form. If you cancel five weeks or more prior to the test, you will receive a refund, less a cancellation fee of AUD$75. If you cancel within the five week period, you will not receive a refund.

When will the results be available?
Your results will be available for collection between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm, 13 calendar days after the test. You must pick up the results in person and you must also bring your original, valid passport as identification. If you do not pick them up, they will be mailed later that day to the latest address we have for you.

How can I change my address?
You should either email us at ielts.enquiries@languages.unsw.edu.au or complete the Change of Address form which you will find on your desk on the test day.

Can I get a re-print of my results?
No. You will receive only one copy of your results. However, if you complete the appropriate section on your application form, we can send up to five free copies to Government departments, approved professional organizations, employers or languages schools. We cannot send copies to relatives, immigration agents or education agents. AUD$20.00 will be charged for copies requested after the test and you must complete the Application for Reprint of Test Results form. If you want your results to be sent to an overseas institution, you must provide an addressed, pre-paid envelope.

Can I apply for a re-mark?

Yes, you can. You must complete an IELTS Application for Re-mark of Test Results form within four weeks of the results being issued. The re-mark fee is AUD$176 and you must also attach your original Test Result Form to the re-mark form. It will take up to six weeks for the re-mark to be processed.
