The NAATI Test Preparation Course - Translation (Lectures and Assignments) is offered in March and August each year .
We offer a Distance Mode ‘Assignments Only’ component throughout the year on request.
What is the difference between Translation and Interpreting?
Translation refers to the transfer of written language from one language into another. Interpreting refers to the rendering of spoken language from one language into another. For more information on the NAATI test please visit www.naati.com.au.

Who is the NAATI Test Preparation Course for?
The course will help prepare you for the Professional level test.
The course does not provide further language training in either English or in the LOTE (Language Other Than English e.g. Chinese) but assumes that you already have an excellent knowledge of both languages.
The course is also for people who have been unsuccessful in a NAATI Test, and who wish to further develop their skills.

NAATI Test Preparation Course - Translation (Lectures and Assignments)
The course is at introductory level and all lectures are conducted in English. The course addresses the theoretical aspects of translation, practical exercises and exam preparation techniques.
Topics covered in the lectures include:
- Introduction to the field of Translation
- NAATI accreditation system, level of proficiency and test content
- Types of translation and translation skills
- Exam Techniques
- Ethics and culture, case studies and strategies
- Feedback on common errors in translation
- Examiner expectations and the NAATI marking system
- Working effectively with clients; professional practice
Assignments and Practice Tests
During the course, you will complete 3 translation assignments at home and 2 practice tests, one in session five and one in session eight of the course.
Distance Mode (Translation Assignments Only Component)
If you cannot attend the course, or if there are not enough participants to run a course, you can prepare for the NAATI test by completing 5 translation assignments at home.
Please select the five assignments on the Application Form. We accept enrolments for the Assignments Only Component through the year as this is not linked to the term dates for the Full Course.
Duration: It takes approximately 12 weeks to complete and to receive feedback on the 5 translation assignments. In some cases, this time can be reduced. For more information contact Admissions by phoning 61 2 9385 0374.
Feedback on Assignments (for both Full Course and Distance Mode Course
As you complete each assignment, you post or email it to your assessor, who is a NAATI qualified professional. Your assessor will then provide you detailed feedback on your performance and post or email it to the address you provided on your Application Form.

What languages are available in the NAATI Translation Test Preparation Course?
We offer the following languages: Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Macedonian, Malaysian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.
Other languages may also be accommodated where possible. Please contact the Institute of Languages to confirm that your language is available.
Are the courses accredited?
No, the courses are not accredited. After you complete a course you are still required to take the NAATI test.
Will I become an accredited translator or interpreter if I complete the NAATI Test Preparation Course?
No. This is a Test Preparation Course which means that after you complete the full course, you still need to take a NAATI Test with NAATI. For further information on the NAATI Tests please contact NAATI.
Entry Requirement for the NAATI Test Preparation Course
To enrol in this course you do not need to take a test. However, you should have an advanced level of competency in English and in the other language, as NAATI Tests are very challenging and require excellent written and oral skills. We strongly suggest your level of English should be equivalent to the following test scores: TOEFL (Paper based) 580; TOEFL (computer based) 250; IELTS Band 6.5.

To help you choose the right assignments and practice tests on your Application Form, first consider which NAATI test you are taking, then select the suggested assignments below. We strongly recommend that you do one direction only:

Certificates (for Full Course Only)
If you attend 80% of the course and if you complete all assignments and practice tests, you will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment.
Additional Assignments
If you would like to continue to work on your translation skills and would like to do additional assignments at the end of the Full Course or after you have completed the Assignments Only component, please contact the Modern Languages Department on 612 9385 0374 for information and fees.
Public Holidays and unforeseen cancellations
Courses are extended by one week if a class falls on a public holiday or if one of the lecturers is ill.
