Tour Guides Language Proficiency Test The University of New South Wales Institute of Languages conducts language tests for Tour Guides in over 40 languages.
Who is the Test for? The Language Proficiency Test for Tour Guides is for people interested in becoming tour guides and for those who are already working as tour guides and are seeking accreditation in a language other than English (LOTE).
What does the Test assess? The Language Proficiency Test for Tour Guides assesses your ability to communicate formally with customers in a language other than English (LOTE). The Test simulates situations typically encountered by tour guides performing their normal job functions.
Does the Test assess writing skills? No. The test is oral. Writing is not tested but you must be able to read the other language.
Does the Test assess technical vocabulary? No. You are not expected to know technical terms but must be able to use vocabulary likely to be encountered while working with a client.
What level should I obtain to achieve a pass in the Tour Guides Language Proficiency Test? You should be an advanced level speaker of the language. You need to achieve an Advanced Level Pass in the Test if you are seeking employment as a tour guide. (see Levels of Achievement).
What happens after I enrol? When we receive your fee, we will provide you with the examiner's contact details. You then contact the examiner and arrange a time to sit for the test with the examiner.
What do I need to take on the day of the Test? Please make sure that you take the test receipt and photo identification to the test. Without these two items, the examiner cannot conduct the test and you will forfeit your fee.
How soon after I enrol do I have to take the test or the workshop? After you enrol, you have three months from the date on your receipt in which to take the test or workshop. After that, your enrolment will expire and you will lose your fee. If you then wish to re-enrol, you will need to pay the full fee again.
When do I receive the Certificate? Certificates are ready seven to ten days after passing the test. We can post the Certificate to you or you can collect it from the Institute in person if you live in Sydney.
What happens if I lose my Certificate? To order a replacement / additional Certificate, please contact the Institute of Languages. The fee for the Replacement Certificate is AUD$50.
How many times can I take the Test? You may retake the test as many times as you wish. We strongly advise you to take private study or a course before reattempting the test. Resit fees are at the full price.
